The College launched a series of activities to welcome year 2024 entering students from 2-6 Sept, 2024. In light of the arrangement of the University and the actual situation the College, the College carried out an orientation week to welcome new students, including the enrollment, the deans’ visit to student accommodation, the temporary conveners’ meeting of new students, the opening ceremony & the teacher-student meeting, the orientation for new students, the fresh-senior student meeting and the lecture on mental health.
Under the leadership of the administrative office, the College Student Union set up a ‘one-stop’ orientation booth in the hall of the ground floor of the Research Building on 2 September. The volunteers scientific divided their job tasks and were enthusiastic and efficient. They organised the new students to complete the enrollment process in an orderly manner in accordance with steps including ID verification, materials receiving and materials distribution.
During this period, Chair of the University Council Hu Ming, President of the University Ma Huaide, and Vice Chair of the University Council Huang Ruiyu came to the booth to check and guide the orientation work, and talked cordially with the new students. They extended warm welcome to all the new students who joined CUPL, also gave high praise to the college's welcoming work and expressed their sympathy and gratitude to the teachers and students for their warm and thoughtful volunteer work.
On the morning of 3 September, the deans of the College visited the new students in their residents. They exchanged views on their life and study with the students after they arrived at the college, and responded to the students’ problems and difficulties in a timely manner. They also stressed the dormitory security.
On the afternoon of 3 September, the College held a temporary conveners’ meeting of new students. Student Tutor Yang Mingquan moderated the meeting. The schedule of the Orientation Week was introduced in-detail to the conveners in the meeting to ensure the success of the activities.
On the morning of 5 September, the Opening Ceremony for Year 2024 Entering Students of the College was held. Members of the college leadership team, the entire faculty in Beijing, outstanding alumni representatives, student representatives, as well as all the class of 2024 freshmen attended the meeting. Associate Dean of the College Prof. Xie Libin presided over the ceremony.
At the ceremony, Prof. Bo Yanna, as the teacher's representative, first gave a speech. She extended warm welcome and congratulations to the new students, encouraging them to be diligent and thoughtful, to lay a solid professional foundation and practice the ideal of the rule of law, and to become respected law people. Subsequently, Compliance Consultant of Volkswagen (China) Investment Co., Ltd. Liu Chang, as a class of 2011 alumni representative, focusing on “Truth comes from comparison”, she shared her study experience and harvest in the college, as well as her own job-hunting and work experience. She cited Professor Jiang Ping's philosophy of “distinguishing truth from falsehood, distinguishing the good from the bad, identifying the superior and revealing the truth” to encourage the students to move forward slowly but steadily, living up to the times by studying comparative law.
On behalf of the class of 2023, student Mou Shuxin shared with the students her learning experience at the university in her speech. She encouraged the students to devote themselves to the study of comparative law, to train their minds, to maintain their concentration, to look to the future and become an ambitious comparative scholar. Later, on behalf of the Class 2024, new student Fan Jiaruan expressed his longing to study and live at the college in his speech. He shared with the students how to live his postgraduate life meaningfully and become a better CUPLer.
Finally, Dean of the College Prof. Xie Zhiyong delivered a speech. He gave a brief account of the development trend of the college in recent years. He hoped that students would pay attention to the accumulation and pursue academic truth with perseverance. He encouraged the students to contribute their youth and talent to the development of comparative law, the development of the University and the modernisation of the rule of law in China.
After the ceremony, the college held a meeting between teachers and new students. Each institute introduced its faculty and characteristics of to the students respectively. The teachers in turn interact with the students to share experiences and suggestions and answer questions.
On the afternoon of 5 September, the orientation for new students was held. Staff from the College Administrative Office Liu Ming, Li Li, Yang Mingquan, Sun Yang and Zhou Fangzheng and all new students attended the meeting. Liu moderated the meeting and introduced the history and development of the college. Then, Li introduced the international cooperation programmes, focusing on the application process of the college’s cooperation programmes with universities in the US, Germany, Australia and other countries and regions. Sun introduced the College's training scheme of postgraduate students in different academic systems, different directions and different training levels, especially the training process and module selection requirements. Zhou introduced the process of developing Party members, and made a reminder on security and ideology. Yang introduced the history of the University, the guide to use the University’s official website and internal system, the contact information of departments and the emergency response, and presented a detailed explanation on the management of student status, scholarships and awards, internship and employment, class management and relevant content.
On the morning of 6 September, Prof. Xu Jingjing from the Mental Health Education and Consultation Centre of the University was invited as the keynote speaker to give a lecture on mental health. Zhou Fangzheng moderated the lecture. Xu vividly introduced the current situation of the mental health of teachers and students, popularised the knowledge of mental health interactively, and emphasised the information of help-seeking methods, consultation channels and medical treatment choices. The lecture helped the new students further absorb the mental health knowledge and promote the ability to deal with mental issues.
On the evening of 6 September, an exchange meeting was held for new and old students. Year 2022 entering students were invited to share their experience in study, life, internship and employment with the new students.
The orientation week came to a successful conclusion after the series of activities.
